Writings

My husband had a great idea. I've got a longer short story in my warehouse that was written for a specific-themed antho. It didn't make the cut, as they said it wasn't what they were looking for. That could mean it was too dark, not dark enough, maybe had a bit too much humor, or sucked ass but they were being nice about it. Whatever the case, it'll be too hard a sell for any other publishing company so the hubs thought it would make a good podcast.

And here is Part Two. Hopefully the conversion process worked and you can click on the little player and you'll be able to hear the second installment. WARNING: I got carried away doing some of the emotions in the story so when I yell, I REALLY YELL! It only happens a couple times but it's a bit jarring. Just giving you a heads up.

If you would like to enjoy some other fiction while you wait for the third and final reading, please feel free to check out the links below!

                                           ==========================================

My first four stories were published on-line and, of course, those sites are now defunct. So I'm going to make .pdfs of all those stories and post them here for free. Believe me, if any of these were previously unpublished, I'd make you pay. Oh yes. I'd make you pay dearly....But they're reprints. So enjoy!

NOTE - the only things I've changed are: the grammatical errors that slipped by the original publishers; extra spaces; spelling mistakes; formatting; etc. I did leave in all the whacked POV issues and all the lovely little adverbs...wait, that's a lie. I did delete a couple. I just couldn't stand them sitting there, mocking me! Damn all you averbly adverbs!

[By the way, don't be a total scuzzball and steal these for your own gain. Not only is it illegal but it's amoral, offensive, and douchey. Douchebagsayswhat?]

The first story I ever wrote is called "Secretary's Day" and was published in Sinister Tales magazine in 2007, though I wrote it in 1999. It's what started my love affair with writing horror fiction. I listed the website below (because they are alive and kicking) but the issue with my story is out of print. I don't believe they will be running off any more. So why not enjoy it here!

My second story is called, "Honor Thy Mother". It was first published at the House of Pain website back in 2000. The archive was up and running for years but it's gone now. I don't know when that happened but I'm glad I checked to see if the link was still working. The website still exists but the fiction is all gone. Anyhoo, it was the second story I ever wrote and it's a very personal story for me (those of you who know me know why).

The third story I wrote, and the first one published, is called "Cry Wolf" and it appeared on the website Sinister Element back in 1999. As with "Secretary's Day" and "Honor Thy Mother", this story is based in some fact. I won't tell you which fact. You'll have to figure it out.

My fourth story, "Keeping Up with the Joneses", originally published at the Planet Relish website, was lucky enough to be accepted as a reprint for a podcast. Rob Callahan's Nightmare Fuel 2 also features a couple of writer friends of mine (Montilee Stormer and Michael Cieslak). I can't find an active link for this podcast anymore and I did have my original recording here. But it takes up too much space so click on the link above to read the .pdf of it.

I can't believe I forgot about my fifth story published on-line. "Cabin Fever" was my first attempt at extreme gore/gross-out horror for Delirium Webzine back in 2001. Compared to others I've read, it's rather tame (I actually gagged while reading a story by Mike McClaughlin years ago). But this was a hoot to write! If you are easily offended by excess gore and violence toward children, you might want to skip this one. If, however, you're not a little girly-man, read on!

The New Flesh Magazine publishes new flash fiction every day. My story, "Earl", appeared Friday, 4/23/10.

Now if those little doosys (dooseys, doozies?) whet your appetite, below are the links where you can purchase the magazines/anthos to which I've contributed. I can't guarantee in-stock availability, but even if they're sold out, you should probably check out another issue or two anyway.

My first novella, "Afraid of the Dark", was e-published by Lyrical Press in 2008. And now Dark Quest books has agreed to publish it! Woohoo!! The contract has been sent in and they've received it. I don't know the printing schedule but I'll keep you all up to date! In the meantime, here's a review from Bitten By Books that came out a couple months after the e-book was published.

The anthology "Reckless Abandon" (edited by David Sparks and Bob Strauss) is out of print from the publisher. Of course, Amazon is always an option (and I know many publishing houses use it).

Interesting Tidbits

Metro Mode, to quote their website, is an on-line magazine showcasing "tales about the people, places, and businesses dedicated to innovating and evolving Metro Detroit."  Last Halloween, a reporter for the magazine called me up for an interview. Tanya Muzudmar was writing an article about the world of horror writing and wanted to interview a couple local horror writers. And so I was recruited into the exciting world of the internet press! Check out the article:

Ah-HA! I finally found a link to a video of my reading from last year's Bad Alien Night at AJ's in Ferndale. I tried to upload the video my hubs took but my computer isn't sophisticated enough to recognize the high-tech file. Figures. However, Crazy Mark TV was there, filmed it AND posted it to YouTube. Hooray! So here's a link. You can see Michael Cieslak introducing GLAHW then me. And then I do my thang. That's all that's in this clip but I'm sure if you dig you can find him, MontiLee Stormer, and Christopher Nadeau performing their readings, too!
